Let us recognize, as Baldwin did, that we are living “in an age of revolution.” Think of all the books on all subjects having to do with black experience that you want and need to read. Think about what it means for us to have just one book on a subject of relevance to our lives written by one black writer but to have many books with diverse perspectives on the same subject. If we want to be part of a revolution, if we want to resist the tyranny of mediocrity then we must see excellence — the striving for excellence in our reading and writing — as essential political resistance.
